How to make good homework habits stick

How do you feel about homework? Is it a source of stress? Is it essential?

Vassos Vassiliou, founder of The After-School Learning Centre, offers tips for creating a set-up to encourage a habit of producing quality work.

“Homework is good for your child as it develops positive habits and skills, such as discipline, which will stay with them for life,” said Vassos.

Aside from removing distractions and having all materials to hand, in a comfortable area, you can:

1.    Ask your child to explain their homework task

2.    If they understand it, they can do it with minimal assistance. If not, offer guidance - but don’t do the work for them. “We ask parents to tell us what their child has been struggling with so that we can help in class,” said Vassos.

3.    Offer praise, everyone loves it! Children progress with encouragement.

4.    Watch frustration levels - sometimes a child just has to take a break. Encourage your child to return to the homework after ten minutes.

5.    Be a role model - do a little paper work too, at the same time and place. It will help your child become an independent learner.

6.    Let your child carefully check homework with your help

7.    Check and change: content, spelling, punctuation, handwriting and presentation.

“By putting in the effort to do the homework, your child will gain confidence and, long-term, the investment will be well worth it,” said Vassos.
