Could your child’s mock exam results have been better?
January 30, 2020

Mock exams are a significant part of the process of preparation for the final GCSE exams in the summer.  It is therefore important to understand that they are a useful means by which both pupils and teachers can measure the key areas that need to be focussed on to attain target grades.  They act as a guide rather than a definite statement of what the real result will be.

The reality is that at the time pupils sit mocks, some of the higher level topics still have yet to be covered and a substantial number of questions in a paper will often cover a few different areas of maths within a question.  This does have an effect of pupils’ ability to answer all parts of a question fully and successfully.

Questions are designed to be challenging and require higher order thinking and reasoning skills.  In our experience, the ability of pupils to synthesise all their learning and apply it confidently to answering GCSE exam comes together closer to the time of the actual exams, meaning late in the spring term.

This explains why it’s often the case that pupils who are motivated and committed to their learning improve by two grades between their mocks and actual exams.  It is not uncommon for pupils to achieve three whole grades more.  We would emphasise that pupils must make it a point of studying independently by consulting revision checklists to ensure they are covering all the necessary topics.

A vital part of the learning process is for students to be bold, come out of their comfort zones and familiarize themselves with difficult worded questions so they become confident with the format of the questions.

Above all, we would encourage all pupils to try to enjoy the learning process and the sense of achievement from completing questions and understanding topics rather than worrying constantly about the end result.  When pupils are conscientious, engaged and less anxious, we find they flourish and make outstanding progress, inevitably leading to excellent grades being attained on results day.
